Pop Up News UK investigated the stigma around student part-time jobs, in a time of economic hardship that has hit those studying the hardest. With the hike in tuition fees, students are under more pressure than ever to gain the best results possible. In some cases, this means balancing study with part-time work to finance their studies, and to allow them to properly enjoy the best period of their lives.
We sent reporters Newcastle University’s Students’ Union to find out how students are coping, what measures and safety nets there are in place to support those in need, and to speak first-hand to students and advisers.
Eve Berwin’s suggestion to those in need was to contact their personal tutor or the Student Advice Centre if the problem was overbearing. There are measures in place to ensure stability within every University, such as financial advisors and counsellors in the Student Wellbeing Centre.
